Exceptional Learning: Moderate to Severe Disabilities, M.Ed.

At the Graduate level, Exceptional Learning Programs at the University of Tennessee- Chattanooga offer a 30-hour Masters of Education Degree. By meeting additional requirements, and in tandem with the M.Ed. coursework, candidates can also earn teacher licensure in the state of Tennessee. The M.Ed. in Exceptional Learning Moderate to Severe Disabilities with licensure options for Endorsement Code 461 Special Education Comprehensive (K–12), prepares teacher candidates in evidence-based practices for supporting students with moderate to severe disabilities across K-12 grade bands. Three pathways to licensure are available: Job-Embedded Induction, Induction Experience (traditional student teaching), and Internship pathways.

Program of Study


Masters of Education in Exceptional Learning: Moderate/Severe Disabilities Grades K-12 is a dynamic 30-credit hour program leading to M.Ed. Teacher candidates seeking licensure with M.Ed. completion, (Endorsement Code 461; Special Education Comprehensive K-12) have two options for obtaining licensure with degree completion (graduate student teaching, or  job-embedded options). Teacher candidates seeking licensure will complete an additional 6-9 hours of either EDUC 5960- Induction Experience, or EDUC 5970- Job-embedded Induction.

Total: 30 hours to M.Ed Completion


Teacher candidates seeking Special Education Comprehensive K-12 licensure (Endorsement Code 461) with M.Ed. are required to complete an additional 9-12 credit hours:

 

Option 1: EDUC 5970 - Job Embedded Mentoring    

 

Option 2: EDUC 5960 - Induction Experience  and EDUC 5950 - Professional Seminar  

 

Option 3: EDUC 5950 - Professional Seminar EDUC 5981 - Internship I , and EDUC 5982 - Internship II  

The Internship pathway to licensure is only allowed for students participating in approved programs. All other students will be required to take Induction Experience.
