Professor Pamela Ashmore, Head
The Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Geography at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga offers strong and well-balanced programs leading to a bachelor of arts degree or a bachelor of science degree with concentrations in either sociology or anthropology. These degrees prepare students to think critically and analytically and to function effectively in our rapidly changing, increasingly diverse and interrelated world. In addition to technical skills (especially writing and data analysis), graduates of these programs will have a good understanding of culture and society, will know how to work constructively with people in organizational settings, and will be well prepared for a variety of jobs in the public and private sectors.
Our degree programs are flexible and allow each student to work closely with a faculty adviser to create a course of study best suited to the student’s individual needs. There are also many opportunities for internships, field experiences, and faculty/student collaborative research.
Our majors consistently do very well on comprehensive exams given to UTC’s graduating seniors, and they have achieved an outstanding record of success in applying to graduate programs in sociology and anthropology. Several of our majors have also gone on to complete graduate studies in related fields including law, medicine, education, and social work.
Graduates of our Department have accepted jobs at a wide variety of public and private organizations and businesses including TVA, Oak Ridge National Laboratories, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the Chattanooga Department of Human Services.
In addition to the programs leading to a BA or BS degree, we also offer programs leading to a minor in sociology, anthropology, or geography.
