Clinical Mental Health Post-Master’s Certificate

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: College of Health, Education, and Professional Studies

The Counselor Education program offers a post-master’s certificate in Clinical Mental Health Counseling for post-master’s students seeking to pursue licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) in the state of Tennessee. The certificate program builds on the foundation of courses taken in a previous counseling degree and coursework is aligned with Tennessee LPC requirements. However, completion of the certificate does not guarantee eligibility for licensure. Applications are accepted at any time for this certificate program.

Admission to the certificate program is based on the following:

A. Admission to the Graduate School
B. Admission to the Certificate Program

a. Successful completion of a master’s or specialist’s degree in counseling or a closely related field, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program.
b. Two letters of recommendation, an updated resume, and an individual interview with a faculty member are required as part of the application process.

Minimum Requirements:

A minimum of 12 hours of coursework will be required for completion of the certificate. All students will be required to complete COUN 5750, Diagnosis and Treatment of Mental Disorders, if they have not previously completed a similar course. Other courses will be selected as advised by the counseling program coordinator. Faculty advisors and students in the certificate program plan a program of study designed to build on the students’ prior graduate course work as well as meet the requirements necessary to pursue licensure as a professional counselor in Tennessee.
