Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures: Languages and Linguistics, B.A.

In Languages and Linguistics, students develop linguistic and cultural competencies in two world languages. This prepares students to adapt and succeed in our modern global society. In addition to gaining language proficiency and intercultural competence, students will develop key skills for today’s job market, such as excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to think critically.

General Education (40-41 hours)

Minor Requirement


  • Completion of a minor with a minimum 2.0 grade point average.

Foreign Language


  • Complete two years in one foreign language or equivalent through placement.

Program Requirements


30 hours in two or more Modern or Classical Languages (excluding English) beyond the first year including the following:

FREN 2110  or SPAN 2110  or GRK 2010  or LAT 2010  and

FREN 2120  or SPAN 2120  or GRK 2020  or LAT 2020  and

At least 15 hours with a minimum of 9 hours completed at UTC at the 3000 or 4000-level.

Additional hours in Modern or Classical Languages to complete a minimum of 30 hours.

First year language classes (1010, 1020) and reading classes (SPAN 2130, SPAN 2140) do not count towards these program requirements.

Experiential Learning


Students pursuing this degree are also required to complete an experiential learning or intensive research component. Students may choose one of the following options:

-A study abroad program of 25 days or longer (Modern Languages) or 7 days or more (Classics)

-An internship (FREN/SPAN 3400) or

-A departmental honors (CLAS/FREN/SPAN 4995R) or

-A senior capstone project (CLAS/FREN/SPAN 4900)

Additional Information and Notes


No more than 6 hours counting towards the Languages and Linguiustics concentration can count towards a minor or other concentration in Classical or Modern Languages. 

2.0 GPA in all required major and related courses.

Minimum of 39 hours of 3000 and 4000 level courses.

Electives to complete 120 hours.
