Music: Piano Performance and Pedagogy, B.M.

The Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Piano Performance and Pedagogy is more specifically designed to prepare students for the professional life of a performing, teaching, and researching pianist. This degree prepares students to work as in accompanying, private studio teaching, researching, and further graduate study. Graduates of the program will be able to:

1) Effectively read musical scores and detect errors in performance; 2) Analyze and identify key elements in musical scores and performances; 3) Present a stylistically appropriate performance from standard musical literature; 4.) Learn to build, teach, and pace technique and repertoire in a piano student; 5.) Develop a knowledge base of major books and other literature on piano playing and teaching; 6) Prepare for professional standing in the field of piano pedagogy. 

General Education (40-41 hours)

Pedagogy Concentration (44 hours)


  • 4 semesters (8 hours) of MUSP 2000-level primary applied study.
  • 4 semesters (8 hours) of MUSP 4000-level primary applied study.
  • Large ensemble participation is required each semester of residence, minimum 8 hours. Piano and guitar majors may substitute up to 4 hours of small ensemble.
  • Two semesters of small ensemble participation required

Additional Information and Notes


Successful completion of Continuation Standards is prerequisite to enrollment in upper-division music courses.

Satisfactory grade in Seminar for every semester enrolled as music performance major.

2.0 GPA in all required major and related courses.

Minimum of 39 hours of 3000 and 4000 level courses.

Electives to complete 120 hours.
