EDUC 3800 - Strategies and Methods for Teaching ESL (Birth to 5th Grade)


(3) Credit Hours

This course will address teacher knowledge and skills required for effective instruction of English Learners (ELs) from birth through 5th grade. By developing understandings and appropriate application of best practices in language and literacy development, teaching techniques, materials, classroom management, application of instructional standards, evaluation, and professional development for young children, students will simultaneously be prepared to successfully complete the requisite Praxis II exam, “English to Speakers of Other Languages (5361),” required for the ESOL endorsement in Tennessee and multiple states.  See https://www.ets.org/s/praxis/pdf/5361.pdf for information about this exam. Field component required. Fall and spring semesters. Prerequisites: EDUC 2010 , ECHD 2430  or ECHD 2435 , EDUC 3600 , Checkpoint 1 or department head approval. Laboratory/studio course fee will be assessed.
