Writing/Rhetoric Certificate

Admission requirements: Applicants must meet the requirements for graduate work in English. (See “Admission” section under English, M.A. )

Required Courses: (12 hours)

ENGL 5150 - Rhetorical Analysis
ENGL 5170 - Composition Theory
ENGL 5190 - Writing Assessment: Theory and Practice
ENGL 5260 - Practice of Teaching Writing

Electives: 6 credit hours chosen from the following:

ENGL 5160 - Orality, Print, and Hypertext
ENGL 5180 - Composition Studies as Cultural Critique
ENGL 5230 - Writing Essays for Publication
ENGL 5250 - Proposals and Prospectus Writing
ENGL 5510r - Fiction Writing
ENGL 5950r - Workshop: Writing

Total: 18 hours

Considerations:

Students who in the course of pursuing the certificate in writing/rhetoric or who upon completing the certificate wish to earn an M.A. in English must apply for entrance into the M.A. program. They may count their certificate coursework toward fulfilling the requirements of the M.A. in English with a concentration in rhetoric/writing. Those who wish to earn the M.A. in English with a concentration in literature must fulfill all the requirements of the literature track.

Students who have the M.A. in English may apply to take the certificate in rhetoric/writing.
