Secondary Education: Secondary Education, M.Ed. (Licensure)


At the graduate level, the School of Education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga offers a 30-33-semester-hour Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Secondary Education. The program includes 24-27 hours of professional education coursework and 3–9 hours of an approved clinical experience. Successful completion of the program, along with passing scores on the required state exams, qualifies candidates for a Tennessee teaching license in Secondary Education (6-12). Three licensure pathways are available: Job-Embedded Induction, Induction Experience (traditional student teaching), and Internship. 

Program of Study


Master’s of Education in Secondary Education is a 30-33 credit-hour program leading to M.Ed. Teacher candidates seeking licensure with an M.Ed. completion (Secondary Education, 6th-12th grade) have three licensure pathways available: Job-Embedded Induction, Induction Experience (traditional student teaching), and Internship. Teacher candidates seeking Secondary Education licensure with M.Ed. are required to complete 3-9 credit hours of clinical experience. Graduate coursework includes 24-27 hours of professional education and 3-9 hours of an approved clinical experience. Successful completion of the program, along with passing scores on the required state exams, will qualify a student for a Secondary Education (6th-12th) Tennessee license.

M.Ed. with Licensure Options


The Secondary Education M.E.d. includes licensure options for Secondary Education 6-12 grades. Teacher candidates seeking licensure with M.Ed. are required to complete 3-9 credit hours of clinical experience. For licensure with M.Ed. a total of 30-33 semester credit hours of graduate coursework is required. Graduate coursework includes 24-27 hours of professional education and 3-9 hours of approved clinical experience.

Option 3 (Internship with SOE Approval ONLY)

EDUC 5981 - Internship I ; 3hrs

EDUC 5982 - Internship II ; 3hrs 

EDUC 5950 - Professional Seminar ; 3hrs

*Internship I and Internship II are only allowed for students participating in approved programs. A student must enroll in both Internship I (fall semester only) and Internship II (spring semester only).
