Specific JUMP Requirements

Admission to the Psychological Science JUMP offers our students the opportunity to work within a vibrant research program, led by Psychological Scientists whose expertise spans a variety of sub-disciplines.  An undergraduate student may submit their application for review during their junior year.  Priority consideration will be given to applications received by February 1 of a student’s junior year.  Admission to the program is contingent upon approval from the Psychological Science graduate program director and the dean of the Graduate School. Admission is limited due to our use of a mentorship model and the number of faculty available to serve as mentors. Specifically, Psychological Science JUMP students will be paired with a faculty mentor who shares similar research interests.

Undergraduate students at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga who will be classified as rising seniors at the start of their JUMP enrollment, are within 30 hours of completion of their Psychology bachelor’s degree, and who have an overall GPA of at least 3.6 are eligible to apply for this joint undergraduate-to-master’s program. In addition, eligible students must have completed PSY 2010, PSY 2020, PSY 2040, and PSY 2020L with grades A’s and B’s to be eligible.

Admission to the Psychological Science JUMP does not guarantee continuance into the Psychological Science M.S. program upon graduation.  Admission to the Psychological Science M.S. program requires both completion of the undergraduate degree and a separate application through the UTC Graduate School.

Students in the Psychological Science JUMP are permitted to enroll in up to 9 graduate credit hours while completing their final 30 hours of undergraduate programming.  Students in the Psychological Science JUMP are permitted to choose from the following courses:

  • PSY 5100 - Statistics and Research Methods in Psychology I
  • PSY 5130 - Statistics and Research Methods in Psychology II
  • PSY 5040 – Qualitative Methods for Applied Research and Evaluation
  • PSY 5950 – Advanced Studies in Experimental Psychology
  • PSY 5960 – Advanced Studies in Developmental/Personality/Social Psychology

Students must earn an A or B in a graduate course for it to be considered toward completion of the graduate program.  Any grade lower than B may not be applied to completion of the graduate program, but may be applied to completion of the undergraduate program. For the completion of the undergraduate program, the graduate courses listed above will be applied to the Advanced Electives category of the curriculum (6 hours) and the Psychology Elective Courses category of the curriculum (3 hours).
