Information Technology in Cybersecurity, B.A.S.

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: College of Engineering and Computer Science

The program curriculum will equip students with advanced and sought-after industry IT and security skills, enabling students to obtain advanced industry-recognized certifications (e.g., Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), and NIST Cybersecurity Framework (NCSF)). Although encouraged throughout the program, taking exams for these certificates will not be required for program completion.

  • General Education basics, including required sciences and mathematics: 60 total credit hours
  • IT and cybersecurity courses: 60 credit hours
    • Information technology (IT) requiring basic programming and advanced IT courses: 30 total credit hours
    • Cyber security courses: 30 total credit hours

The curriculum is also designed to integrate a 2 + 1 degree pathway. Students will be assessed a Program Fee. This approach will enable students to start their education at a Tennessee community college and transfer to the proposed program after completing an IT-related, science, or engineering technology Associate of Science (AS) or Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree. These students, after completing the proposed curriculum, will graduate in one year from the program. AA/AAS transfer students will transfer 60-65 credit hours and take additional hours at UTC to complete the program requirement of 120 hours.

Internship

Due to the program’s accelerated nature, students’ courses are designed with a shorter duration. Students would not be allowed to take regular semester-long courses while in the program. A student will be enrolled in three to four upper-level courses per term. To succeed in the intense one-year program, students in the BAS-ITCyS program must take the courses that are a part of the program and will not be able to enroll in traditional courses concurrently. During the week, Monday through Friday, students take courses in the morning at UTC and then spend the afternoon at a company as part of their internship program.

General Education (33 hours)

(see General Education  for the list of approved courses)

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Information Technology in Cybersecurity or Mechatronics only requires 2 courses/6 hours of Humanities and Fine Arts and 1 course/3 hours of Behavioral and Social Science.
