School Athletic Program Leadership Certificate

This post-baccalaureate certificate develops leadership skills and insights into the complex field of athletic program leadership, specifically within the context of educational settings (e.g., K-12 schools). Coursework aligns to the UTC Athletic Program Leadership Standards, addressing key aspects of leading contemporary athletic programs, including: 1) creating a shared vision, 2) creating a collaborative and competitive culture, 3) continuously improving, 4) extending beyond the field of competition through outreach, and 5) managing resources and supervising personnel. Candidates will be expected to complete course-required clinical field experience in an educational setting to apply and demonstrate competency in course concepts. Required coursework utilizes the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s (NIAAA) curriculum for athletic administration. Successful completion of the program results in eligibility to apply for a certificate from the NIAAA to become a Registered Athletic Administrator.

Program admission consideration criteria include:

  • Two letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to the applicant’s leadership potential
  • A resumé
  • A 2-3 page leadership essay, presenting the applicant’s accomplishments, goals and interests in being an athletic program leader
  • Hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution

Additional Requirements


At least one graduate level 3-credit hour course addressing aspects of leadership applicable to athletic programs with approval from the Program Director/Advisor. Acceptable courses for this three-credit requirement include, but are not limited to:
