Public Health: Nutrition and Dietetics, M.P.H.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) Master of Public Health program, with a concentration in Nutrition and Dietetics (MPH ND), is an accredited program offered through the College of Health, Education and Professional Studies in the department of Health and Human Performance.  The program is accredited as a Future Education Model by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) and Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).  Students who successfully complete this program and all supervised experiential learning (SEL) hours will be eligible to sit for the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s credentialing examination for Dietitian Nutritionists enabling them to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

Admission requirements

Students seeking admission to the MPH ND must first meet the general admission requirements associated with the UTC Graduate School as described in the Graduate Catalog.  Second, students must meet the following MPH ND additional admission requirements:

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited 4-year institution with a 3.0 GPA or better.
  • All the following prerequisite courses need to be at the baccalaureate level or higher with a minimum grade of B (3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale) and must be completed prior to enrollment:
    1. Anatomy and Physiology course with lab
    2. Biochemistry
    3. General Chemistry
    4. Human Nutrition
    5. Life Cycle Nutrition
    6. Microbiology
    7. Organic Chemistry

Students who have not completed all pre-requisites may still be considered for program admission; however, the program may request proof of enrollment or completion of a course prior to admission.  The program may also request additional requirements during the application review process.

Program completion requirements

The MPH ND is a full-time graduate program that provides the required coursework and all SEL hours in one program.  The MPH ND program is not a distance education program and cannot be completed online.  Coursework and SEL hours can occur during day or night time.  To complete the program, students must complete 42 credit hours of study and a minimum of 1,000 SEL hours.
