The Counselor Education program offers a post-master’s certificate in School Counseling for post-master’s students seeking to pursue licensure as a school counselor in the state of Tennessee. The certificate program builds on the foundation of courses taken in a previous counseling degree. Coursework is aligned with requirements for licensure as a school counselor in the state of Tennessee. Applications are accepted at any time for this certificate program.

Admission to the certificate program is based on the following:

A. Admission to the Graduate School
B. Admission to the Certificate Program

a. Successful completion of a master’s or specialist’s degree in counseling or a closely related field, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program.
b. Two letters of recommendation, an updated resume, and an individual interview with a faculty member are required as part of the application process.

Minimum Requirements

A minimum of 12 hours of graduate coursework (plus an additional 6 hours of undergraduate for non-teachers) will be required for completion of the certificate. All students will be required to complete COUN 5650, Examination and Implementation of School Counseling Principles, if they have not previously completed a similar course.
