Theatre Division Mission Statement:

The Theatre Division of the Department of Performing Arts combines performance and production activities within a liberal arts environment to develop collaborative artists, while serving the community.  By providing a strong foundation in the traditions and disciplines of theatre, the academic program encourages the artists to take risks, make compelling choices, and think independently.  Our goal is to produce graduates who bring an informed awareness of the world to their lives and art, while preparing them for a variety of career paths.

Theatre Division Goals:

(As outlined by National Association of Schools of Theatre.)

  1. The ability to think conceptually and critically about text, performance and production.
  2. An understanding of playwriting and production processes, aesthetic properties of style, and the way these shape and are shaped by artistic and cultural forces.
  3. An acquaintance with a wide selection of theatre repertory including the principal eras, genres, and cultural sources.
  4. The ability to develop and defend informed judgments about theatre.

The Theatre Division offers a curriculum that leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Theatre. It seeks to promote an understanding of cultural history, an appreciation of meaning and form, a respect for and a facility with language, a sense of responsibility for the larger human community, and a firm grounding in the discipline and the creative processes involved in the making of theatre.

Through its curriculum and public season of performance the Theatre Division is committed to exposure to and enhanced appreciation of the art of the theatre and the related arts of film and dance. The department division provides the means for involvement in the art of theatre for interested members of the University community.

Courses designed to develop basic competency in oral communication are regularly offered by the department.

Students may elect to take specified courses leading to state licensure to teach theatre at the primary and secondary level.

General Education

Rhetoric and Writing: (6 hours)

  • Two approved courses in rhetoric and writing

Fine Arts and Humanities: (12 hours)

  • Complete one course in each subcategory

Historical Understanding (3 hours)

Literature (3 hours)

Thought, Values and Beliefs (3 hours)

Visual and Performing Arts (3 hours)

Natural Sciences: (7-8 hours)

  • Two approved natural science courses, at least one including a laboratory component

Behavioral and Social Sciences: (6 hours)

  • Two approved behavioral or social science courses in two different disciplines

Mathematics: (3 hours)

  • One approved mathematics course

Statistics: (3 hours)

  • One approved statistics course

Non-Western Culture: (3 hours)

  • One approved non-western culture course

Foreign Language

  • Complete two years in one foreign language or equivalent through placement.

Minor Requirement

  • Completion of a minor with a minimum 2.0 grade point average.

Additional Information and Notes

2.0 GPA in all required major and related courses (including specified General Education courses).

Minimum of 39 hours of 3000 and 4000 level courses.

Electives to complete 120 hours.

Theatre Education Licensure

Students choosing to be certified in Theatre Education should pursue the B.A. in Theatre and declare a minor in Education . Those individuals will be required to meet the requirement of the initial degree as well as requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Program  and state licensure requirements. This may require additional coursework.
