HIST 2860 - Revolutionary Americas (CZ or HF) (3) Credit Hours
This course begins with the Wars of Independence that engulfed Latin America in the early 1800s and continues up to the present day. We will analyze nineteenth-century nation-building projects from Argentina and Chile in the south to Mexico and the United States in the north. We will also explore how, during the twentieth century, Latin America became a critical battleground for various ideologies on both Left and Right, as well as the stage for some of the worst violence of the Cold War. Topics likely to receive special attention include: capitalism, nationalism, slavery, race and indigeneity, neocolonialism, and revolution. Every 3-4 semesters.
