This course explores the processes by which the Americas (North and South) were defined and constructed from the arrival of Europeans at the end of the 1400s up to the Wars of Independence that swept across both continents in the early 1800s. While we will discuss the colonies that became Canada and the United States, the primary focus will be on those countries that comprise Latin America. Topics likely to receive special attention include: colonialism, capitalism, slavery, plantation agriculture, race and indigeneity, and revolutionary movements. Every 3-4 semesters.
