An introduction to the history of the African continent from the earliest development of human societies until the end of the 19^th century and the acceleration of European imperial expansion. Topics may include social structures and economic systems; cultures and technologies; kingdoms and state formation; impacts of Islam and Christianity in Africa; African participation in regional and world trade networks; and slavery and the global slave trade. Every 3-4 semesters.
