The course is an overview of modern U.S. history from the Reconstruction period through recent times. The class examines the struggles of different racial, ethnic, gender, and age groups highlighting the diversity of their living circumstances, political and cultural attitudes, and their roles in U.S. society. Conflicts within and between different groups, as well as struggle over freedom and rights as constants in American history define course themes, readings, and assignments. The class is designed to help students understand and master how historians think and write by examining varied and at times competing narratives of the past. The lectures focus on the critical reading and analysis of primary documents, including letters, speeches, court decisions, cartoons, propaganda posters, political platforms, interviews, to new name a few.
