ART 2150 - The History of Art from 1400 CE to the Present (HF) (3) Credit Hours
This course surveys the art, architecture, and artistic movements developed between 1400 CE and the present day. Beginning with the emergence of transatlantic trade and colonialism and concluding with the advent of the contemporary global art market, this course examines important achievements in painting, sculpture, architecture, and material culture as defined by current art historical scholarship. The course emphasizes both the individual cultural production and critical global dialogues of art from Renaissance Europe, the Ottoman Empire, India, North and South America, Asia, Africa, the United States, and other geographic regions. Focus is divided between visual study and critical interpretation, the latter emphasizing how works of art fit into their historical, religious, political, social, and/or cultural contexts. The course also foregrounds the concepts and ideas that led to the development of contemporary art. This course is designed to heighten perception, appreciation, and enjoyment of the visual arts, and introduce foundational ideas such as the formal elements, design principles, and other significant technical factors.Spring semester.
