HHP 5552 - Chronic Disease Epidemiology - Cardiometabolic (3) Credit Hours
This course is designed to provide an overview of the major topics and issues in cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cardiometabolic disease (CMD) epidemiology (i.e., coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, glucose intolerance, and insulin sensitivity) including: 1) summarization of relevant pathophysiology, 2) epidemiology of CVD and CDM (incidence, prevalence, mortality and morbidity) overall and in special populations, 3) major risk factors for CVD and CMD including genetic, social and economic determinants, 4) methodologic issues in CVD/CMD research including surveillance and measures of CVD/CMD endpoints and relevant exposures, 5) major population-based studies of CVD/CMD in the US and globally, 6) primary and secondary CVD/CMD prevention, target groups for prevention, and community-based intervention studies, 7) treatment of CVD/CMD and major CVD/CMD trials, 8) CVD/CMD-related research occurring within UTC and the UT College of Medicine Chattanooga. Prerequisites: HHP 5550 and Math 5150 or department head approval.
