HIST 3485 - The Civil War in American History 3 Credit Hours
Students will examine how Americans have reconstructed the memory of the Civil War to suit their needs and circumstances. It will explore how soldiers and other participants understood their own lives and how their descendants and subsequent generations shaped the meaning of the war for the sake of political, economic, and cultural power. To pursue these questions, students will learn about the theory of historical memory, the politicization of memory, and how Americans have consciously constructed the memory and meaning of the Civil War to make sense of and influence the present. On demand.
