EDUC 3700 - Language and Culture (3) Credit Hours
This course focuses on language as an aspect of human culture. The purpose of the course is to examine how language functions differ across cultures and how differences—ranging from the origins of humans to language phenomena in the present day—have been interpreted. Specific areas of study will include the structural properties of human languages, how the major language families differ, how and why speakers differ within communities, and how an outsider can come to understand and appreciate basic principles at work within a language other than his/her native language. Prerequisites: EDUC 2010 , ECHD 2430 , Checkpoint 1 or department head approval.
