This course builds on essential knowledge, values, and skills related to social work theory and micro social work practice. This course emphasizes a systems, person-in-environment perspective and a social, economic, and political justice framework. Relevant concepts and theories from the behavioral sciences will be explored with the aim of providing students with a holistic view of human behavior, specifically with individuals and families. This contextual emphasis will look at human development in the context of larger social conflicts associated with class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and ability status. This course will help build upon social work student’s assessment abilities within generalist social work practice. Within this context, there is a focus on theories, models, conceptual frameworks, and evidence-based practice that pertain to working with individuals and families. There is also an emphasis on knowledge, skills, values, and cognitive affective processes that are explicitly or implicitly involved in social work practice within a micro context. Fall semester. Prerequisites: Admission into the Social Work program or department head approval.
