This course examines the emergence of China from about 1600 to the present. It explores the national history of China, as well as China’s place in East Asia and the world. Topics include High-Qing society and culture, revolution, internal and external migration, Euro-American-Japanese imperialism, nationalism, socialism, rural-urban divide, industrialization, war, globalization, the environment, and the re-emergence of China as an economic superpower.Standard Letter Grade
