PHYS 3180 - Radiation Physics and Introductory Health Physics (3) Credit Hours
Introduction to ionizing radiation, its production and interaction with matter, its biological effects and its measurement. Radiation protection practices and regulatory guidelines. The uses of radiation and radioisotopes in biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, and medicine. Benefits and hazards of nuclear energy. Nuclear weapons and the effects of nuclear warfare. Prerequisites: PHYS 1040 and PHYS 1040L , or PHYS 2320 and PHYS 2320L , or department head approval. Laboratory/studio course fee will be assessed.
