EDUC 3220 - Literacy I: Instruction for Emergent Learners (Birth-1st Grade)


(3) Credit Hours

This course will address teacher knowledge and skills required for effective curriculum design, instruction, and evaluation of emergent learners from birth through 1st grade and the wide range of children with exceptional needs, inclusive of English Language Learners.  The components of emergent literacy include oral language development, phonological and phonemic awareness, the alphabetic principle, high frequency vocabulary development, decoding, and emergent spelling pattern and writing strategies. Field component required. Prerequisites: EDUC 2010, ECHD 2430, and ENGL 2280 or department head approval. Prerequisite or corequisite: EDUC 3170 or department approval; must have met the requirements of Checkpoint 1.
