Program Mission:

It is the mission of the civil engineering program to provide a high-quality education to students of all backgrounds to become civil engineering professionals who plan, design, build and manage infrastructure needed for the challenging environment of the 21st century. The specialty also aims to provide service to the civil engineering profession locally and regionally.

Program Objectives:

In support of this mission, the civil program aims to produce graduates who

  • participate in professional societies;
  • agree that the environment at UTC was conducive to their achieving;
  • work in multidisciplinary teams;
  • are progressing toward professional registration;
  • have the ability to function as civil engineers;
  • pursue graduate studies.

The civil engineering program curriculum provides an opportunity to obtain a firm foundation in engineering science and develops the techniques of analysis and design which are basic for the successful practitioner. Emphasis is placed on developing problem-solving skills. The students’ experiences culminate in a year-long civil engineering team project supported by industry. The civil specialty also offers an option in structural engineering.

The civil engineering program faculty have degrees in civil engineering and is committed to delivering a civil engineering curriculum that has strong emphasis on engineering analysis and utilization of modern engineering tools.

Degree and Accreditation:

Civil Engineering program graduates obtain a B.S.C.E. degree. This program is accredited by the EAC of ABET Inc. under the Civil Engineering Program Criteria.

Rhetoric and Composition: (6 hours)


  • Two approved courses in rhetoric and composition

Natural Sciences: (7-8 hours)


  • Two approved natural science courses, at least one including a laboratory component

Humanities and Fine Arts: (6 hours)


  • One approved fine arts course and one approved humanities course

Cultures and Civilizations: (3 hours)


  • One approved Non-Western Cultures and Civilizations course

Behavioral and Social Sciences: (6 hours)

Technical Elective:


  • One 3-hour 3000-level or 4000-level courses in an Engineering specialty.

Additional Information and Notes


128 hours (138 for co-op graduates).

Minimum 39 hours at the 3000-4000 level.

2.0 GPA in all required major and related courses (including specified General Education courses).
