UTC’s mechanical engineering program prepares mechanical engineering students for successful careers in industry and academia, and provides service to the mechanical engineering profession.
Program Educational Objectives:
In support of this mission, UTC’s mechanical engineering program educational objectives are to
- Prepare mechanical engineering students, who are technically competent using analysis methods, appropriate to solving mechanical engineering problems for industry and for graduate studies;
- Develop skills pertinent to the design process including economic considerations, having students who are able to work effectively in teams and demonstrate good communication skills;
- Instill in our students an understanding of their professional, societal and ethical responsibilities, the importance for lifelong learning through professional development, and encourage progression toward professional licensure.
Program Student Outcomes:
In support of the program education objectives, each mechanical engineering graduate from UTC will have demonstrated prior to graduation:
- An ability to identify, formulate and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
- An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental and economic factors
- An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
- An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgements, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
- An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
- An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgement to draw conclusions
- An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
The mechanical engineering program curriculum offers two options: Energy Systems and Mechanical Systems. The Energy Systems option emphasizes applications of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer. The Mechanical Systems option emphasizes applications in the analysis and design of machine elements and mechanisms. Two courses differentiate the two options.
The mechanical engineering program faculty have degrees in various emphasis areas of mechanical engineering and are committed to delivering a mechanical engineering curriculum that has strong emphasis on engineering analysis tools, utilization of modern, electronic instrumentation culminating with a mechanical engineering and interdisciplinary design experience.
Degree and Accreditation:
Mechanical Engineering program graduates obtain a B.S.M.E. degree. This program is accredited by the EAC of ABET Inc. under the Mechanical Engineering Program Criteria.
