PHYS 3180 - Radiation Physics and Introductory Health Physics


(3) Credit Hours

Introduction to ionizing radiation, its production and interaction with matter, its biological effects and its measurement. Radiation protection practices and regulatory guidelines. The uses of radiation and radioisotopes in biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, and medicine. Benefits and hazards of nuclear energy. Nuclear weapons and the effects of nuclear warfare. On demand. Prerequisite: PHYS 1040/PHYS 1040L or PHYS 2320/PHYS 2320L; or approval of the department head. Laboratory/studio course fee will be assessed.
